Nature Reflections

Kirsten discusses how her passion for nature and travel led her to backpack around the world for three years, a journey that converted her from a herpetologist scientifically analyzing nature to a storyteller reflecting nature. Kirsten divulges how her biologist training influences her photography and how being involved in the arts has expanded her work to include a more interpretive abstract style aimed at conveying the emotional experience of nature.

History of Biscayne Bay

Based on her Key Biscayne and Biscayne National Park books, Kirsten shares the history and environment of Biscayne Bay and its islands. Ranging over native Americans and Juan Ponce de León’s 1513 arrival, through centuries of colonial rule, pioneer settlement, hosting America’s wealthy and powerful, and citizen-led conservation battles, this presentation reveals the stories of Biscayne Bay through historical imagery and through Kirsten’s modern photography of Biscayne National Park, taken in celebration of it’s 2018 golden 50-year anniversary.

History of Dry Tortugas

First charted by Juan Ponce de León over 500 years ago, the isolated islands 70 miles west of Key West were christened “Tortugas” by this early explorer and continue to bear that name, North America’s second-oldest persistent place name after “Florida” itself. Kirsten shares historic images and tales from her book Dry Tortugas National Park to lead audiences through centuries of visitors from native Americans in dugout canoes, to those involved with the construction of Fort Jefferson – the nation’s most ambitious masonry fort – through its post-Civil War infamy as a prison for Dr. Samuel Mudd and other convicted Lincoln conspirators, and into the modern era when it became a national park protecting vast cultural and biological resources.
